NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg Pushes Breastfeeding Inititive

New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg is now pushing breastfeeding through an inititive program that will push hospitals to urge breastfeeding over formula. The program would require hospitals to keep baby formula under lock and key but new mothers will not be denied the formula if it is requested.

The program slated to begin September 3, will require hospitals keep track of the number of formula bottles and usage. Along with the formula protocol 27 of New Yorks 40 hospitals have agreed to stop giving free tote bags with formula company logos and any other formula company advertisement products.

This program called “Latch on NYC” would also have hospital staffers confer with new mothers that insist on using formula of the benefits of breast feeding. Breastfeeding activists are elated and state benefits including immune system strengthening, digestive system benefits, lower risk of respiratory infections, ear infections and asthma.
