Anti Diarrhea Drug Intestinomicina Gets FDA Warning

Over the counter anti diarrhea drug Intestinomicina which contains the ingredient chloramphenicol was recalled in July because of safety risks. Today the FDA has issued a warning that usage of Intestinomicina should be stopped immediately.

The drug chloramphenicol can interfere with red and white blood cell production. Life threatening injuries associated with chloramphenicol is bone marrow toxicity, this is when the body does not produce ample red blood cells, white blood cells or platelets. Bone marrow toxicity is often reversible but in some cases death may occur.

Intestinomicina is often sold in grocery stores that feature products from Central and South American specialty foods, Intestinomicina packages are usually labeled in Spanish. Consumers should again stop using and
